Make Your Argument on QBs
So, now that Fresno State football spring camp has come to a close, we want to hear your arguments on who should start at quarterback when the season begins.
Should it be veteran junior Ryan Colburn, the only candidate with any game experience? Speedy redshirt freshman Ebahn Feathers who can add a new chapter to the playbook? Blue-chip true freshman Derek Carr with all the pedigree, confidence and lifelong love for the Bulldogs? Or is it still too close to call?
I'll start this off with my view -- it's still too early to decide, but Carr has me sold on his ability as it translates to the next level and the No. 1 thing to love about him is the way he thinks like any other lifelong fan. He just has a whole lot more football talent than most of us. After an 11 for 13 showing with 3 TDs and 140-plus yards in the Spring Game, Carr has to be the leader. Colburn isn't far behind though, and Feathers just can't pass accurately enough to win the job but offers enough versatility to play a huge part in every game coming in and out in special packages.
What do you say?
It's Carr. I was at the spring scrimmage and saw DC play in high school.
ReplyDeleteman this is tough. I want to go with Carr because I think he can be a leader, even as a freshman and I think we are going into the season with nothing to lose, even though the team wont think like that. I just think he can handle it as a true. But I think it will be Colburn who wins the job. All three looked really good at the spring game and Feathers looked impressive IMO but that was the first time I have seen him play. When feathers played, the defense looked like it always does when we play a running qb. But again, I think Carr can do it all and will lead us to greatness or a WAC championship before he leaves.
ReplyDeleteI want it to be Colburn, only because his last name is/ oh-so-close to mine.
ReplyDeleteCarr has the physical tools to be great. It's all about the mental part that can be questioned at this point. Colburn has been waiting PATIENTLY (watched Brandstater for 3 years) and he deserves the shot to be starting QB. I say give it to Colburn until he plays his way off the field, if he ever does. Carr can sit for a year and get used to the feel of college football. I have no doubts that Derek Carr will be a great QB, I would just hate to see him rushed and play bad, and possibly lose confidence at such a young age.
ReplyDeleteFeathers I think will be a play-maker ... but not as a throwing QB ... as a WR/RB/QB special package type play-maker.
Give the starting QB spot to Colburn.
Let Carr learn for one year.
Let Feathers get his hands on the ball early and often.
The future is bright, no doubt.
After the last spring practice you still can't really tell they all look decent when the defense is only running 20% of their blitz packages. Plus, I would of like to see feathers throw out of the pocket instead of always on the run, they never really gave him an opportunity to do that. Since Carr completed the highest percent of his passes I would give him the nod just based on that.
ReplyDeleteWhen a young man comes in and changes everything, when he doesn't just do everything that is asked of him, he does it better than anyone could have expected him to have done, you know there is something special there. We've got Carr for a long time, we don't 'need' to start him game one- but it seems that he's proven that he can. Colburn and Feathers are awesome; Carr is extraordinary. I watched him play at Bakersfield Christian, and it was a unique opportunity to see something great in the making. I think he's wowed enough people to get the starting job.

ReplyDeleteWho cares how patiently Coburn has waited. This is about football and not virtue.
